On profite du beau temps
Don't forget our Call Home Time on Sunday from 8:30 to 10pm local time.
Bonjour from the Nantes Academy!
Today in their morning language classes our students discussed local celebrities, both historical and contemporary. They listened to Nantes-born artist Christine and the Queens, talked about Jules Verne and his ongoing influence on the city — which was a great way to prepare them for our Machines of the Isle visit tomorrow where they will see the giant mechanical elephant inspired by Verne’s novel The Steam House (1880) — and discovered screenwriter Jacques Demy, who is best known for the musicals The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) and The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967). They also reviewed the primary and secondary moods of French tenses before discussing the various language registers (high formal, formal, neutral, informal, slang) and when it is appropriate to use them.
The third hour of language classes was spent discussing the French Revolution and its various repercussions on history, politics, social rights and even lexicon.
After lunch, they headed to their cultural exploration class of the week in order to finish and present their final projects.
This afternoon, despite the cloudy weather, a group of students will be spending some well-deserved time at the pool. Others opted to go downtown instead to explore the city with the RAs (expect suitcases to be quite full by the end of the program!) and some will be staying on campus to relax and get some rest.
Tonight is movie night and the students will be watching the critically acclaimed dramedy The Intouchables (2011).
We’re all very excited for the weekend as we have a lot of fun visits and activities planned: the Machines of the Isle, a picnic, a barbeque, a day at the Puy du Fou historical theme park and, of course, our 14th of July celebrations! Not to mention Call Home Time on Sunday, 8:30-10pm French Time.
