Keeping up with Classes: Week 4 at the Chinese Academy
Location: Saint Michael’s College
What the Chinese Academy did today: We’re closing in on our final week of the Chinese Academy here at St. Michael’s College! This weekend, the kids went to Albany to eat authentic Chinese food, visit a museum, shop at an Asian grocery store, and enjoy boba tea. On Sunday, they visited Church Street again before attending one last Chinese Academy dance together in the evening. Today, students returned to regular classes and enjoyed loads of games, interactive activities, and fun moments during their lessons. They also took their final STAMP tests to assess their progress over their time at MILSA! We are so proud of all they have accomplished so far and look forward to their continued growth in the Chinese language.
In our classrooms…
Level 1 students practiced reading and understanding maps from Chinese culture and American culture. They discussed landmarks, routes, and other location-oriented topics and will continue to do so throughout this week.
In Level 2 classes, today’s can-do statement is “I can identify and name a variety of countries and languages in the world.” They read articles, discussed the material, and reported on the “10 Most Frequently Spoken Languages in the World” for their classmates.
By the end of today, Level 3 students will be able to “describe the geography and natural resources of the target country/countries.” In their classes, they discussed China’s natural resource crisis and some potential solutions for the future.
Similarly, Level 4 students learned/will continue to learn about social issues that are pervasive in China and other Chinese-speaking regions. Today, their can-do statement is “I can summarize stories about issues that are important to youth in China and their aspirations for the future.”
