Departure Day Details

It’s hard to believe our time here at MMLA is almost up!  It feels like we all just got here yesterday. Students will inevitably be sad to say goodbye to their new friends, but I’m sure many of them are eager to see friends and family back home. As we wind down, everyone is looking forward to a busy last day with our graduation ceremony and a final dance celebration tonight where they will finally be able to speak English again.

Arabic Academy’s Last Days

As we are winding down with the last day here at Pomona, here are some final Arabic academy updates! Students were really excited as we surprised them withs’mores galore one evening. The sugar made it a little more difficult to put them tobed but it was worth the smiling chocolate faces. Teachers paid a visit to the dorm and had a chance to play chess, soccer and chat with students over gooey goodness in the cool California evening weather.

Soccer Saturday!

Messi may not have played and Shakira may not have performed, but the MMLA soccer finals held this past Saturday afternoon were just about as intriguing for the students here.

For the first round, a continuation of the match that was cut short at the World Expo, the Spanish and Arabic Academies battled long and hard for the title. The score was still 0-0 when the regulation time had ended, and the match went into overtime. At long last, the Arabic Academy came out victorious with a single, hard-earned goal.

Flash Mob: Cafeteria Performances Continue!

The ongoing battle for who will have the greatest unofficial cafeteria performance is still going strong! The Spanish Academy upped their game yesterday at dinner with a performance of Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba”. Several students and RAs played guitars while the majority of the students sang. The rest of the dining hall sat and enjoyed the acoustic performance, which helped to clear some of the assessment stress away.

Bastille Day Festivities!

Bonne fête nationale à tous! Sunday was Bastille Day or more often referred to as Le quatorze juillet. Just ten days ago, all academies had a great time celebrating the Fourth of July and this weekend, the French Academy got to celebrate France’s national holiday with plenty of cultural exploration!

الى البحر! (To The Beach!)

The Arabic Academy took a trip off of Pomona’s grounds to visit the Santa Monica Pier this past week! The students could not withhold their excitement all morning starting from breakfast. After attending classes and eating lunch, students loaded onto the buses and we were on our way. With Peter Pan playing in Arabic, students passed the infamous Hollywood sign and when we finally arrived the smiles on the students’ faces were so BIG!

It’s Saturday Night, Live!

As dusk fell on the Pomona College campus Saturday evening, Spanish Academy students displayed their various skills at their annual Talent Show! Everything from song and dance routines to stand-up comedy took place. A group of students even did a routine to “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” from Disney’s “Mulan” in Spanish! For the grand finale, a group of students lip-synched to Iggy Azalea’s hit song, “Fancy.” As Saturday evening proved, the Spanish Academy is indeed, “so fancy” and quite talented.

World Expo Night!

The ability of people to connect and communicate without relying on the use of words is something that we have all come to better understand through living in language here at the Language Academy. The World Expo is a perfect example of the amazing human capacity for this understanding.

This Week in Arabic Evening Assembly

Every day, evening assembly is a time for students to use their vocabulary and illustrate what they’ve learned in the classroom by presenting it to the entire academy in a creative way. Tonight students presented projects about different foods across the Arab world as well as many different cities, attractions and famous locations. Other students did skits to using the new food vocabulary. Some skits were set in restaurants while others were phone conversations.

Yet Another Full Day!

Yet another event-filled day has ended here at Pomona College! From classroom to activities time, this day has certainly been packed full of language fun! Chinese Academy students got to hit the sand for a game of “beach” volleyball… all that was missing was the ocean!
