German Academy Update from Britta Roper

Dear Parents,

It is already Friday, and another week with the Germany Academy has flown by! This past Sunday, the students celebrated the Fourth of July early by watching a stunning fireworks display in Poultney. The celebrations carried over into Monday when the students marched in the town parade. They carried the various flags of German-speaking countries and painted the German flag on their faces.

Painting, Extreme Napping and Presentations

Today was another eventful day at the Summer Academy in Poultney, Vermont! Students participated in many activities both in and outside of class.

Some highlights of the day included a new activity called "extreme napping" and the Arabic Academy's Evening Assembly in which groups of students performed skits, songs and dances for their peers to enjoy! These assemblies usually take place once a week in each academy and provide a platform for students and teachers to share their learning with one another.

Guests, Fun Games and Mask Making!

Today was quite eventful, especially for the Arabic Academy who had three guests visiting! Students attended their regularly scheduled classes in the morning and then while the other Academies participated in activity period, the Arabic students listened to a presentation from a representation of the King’s Academy in Jordan. Meanwhile Spanish and German students enjoyed a soccer game, painted masks, swam, etc.

Activities Galore!

The activities that take place during activity period each day vary from day to day. Oftentimes the REs plan activities centered around their own interests. Let's take a look at a few of the activities that occurred today!

Some Arabic students went on a peaceful nature walk in Poultney. During this they paused a few times to appreciate their surroundings and draw what was in front of them. There are many hiking trails surrounding Green Mountain College, and it was nice to explore them and breath some fresh air!

An Independence Day Celebration at Green Mountain College

Today all three academies came together to celebrate the independence of the United States! It is tradition that every year the town of Poultney, Vermont, puts on a parade to celebrate the Fourth of July and the Arabic, Spanish and German Academies participate in it.

The Pre-Celebration and A Typical Sunday Schedule

Sundays are for sleeping in and taking advantage of one last day of rest before the busy week begins. And that is exactly what occurred at Green Mountain College this morning. Students and staff alike spent the day enjoying the beautiful weather and catching up with their friends.

Spanish Academy Update from Clara Hoellerbauer

During the first three days, students will be going through the Spanish Academy Crash Course. During this time, they will learn about the Language Pledge®, Communication Strategies and how to maximize their learning while at the Academy.

Arabic Academy - Welcome to the Land of Full Immersion!

The Arabic Academy held a ceremony for the signing of the Language Pledge® at which the lead director of this Academy, Khalid Madhi, spoke regarding the power of language to open doors to the world and the importance of this promise to continue speaking Arabic 24/7. He stated that, "If you are able to go home and tell your mom or your friend that you love them in five or six different ways in Arabic alone, I think we have achieved our goal here."

A Day in the Life at Green Mountain College!

The first week of full immersion may seem difficult and daunting at first, especially for those just beginning to learn a new language. However, students adapt quickly to the new and challenging environment at the Language Academy.

The Language Pledge® and Classes Start!

Today is the first full day that members of the Academy will be in their target languages, as they have all agreed to The Language Pledge®, which binds them to no longer use English as a form of communication. Most students seem to be both excited and nervous about their journey ahead, as it will be extremely rewarding as well as challenging.
