Learning How to Make Perfect Pinchos from our “Master Chef”

Juan Manuel (often referred to by students as JuanMa) was our chef for the last 4 weeks. During this time Juan not only cooked for us, but also provided us with lots of great memories through his excellent company and humor. At some point everyone in our staff felt that Juan was part of our MMLA-team. Aside from being a chef, Juan is also passionate about education and was once an educator himself. Combining his two passions, Juan actually gave an impromptu lecture on how to cook pinchos.

Students Create Their Own Pincho Recipes

After Chef “JuanMa“‘s pincho cooking instruction, the students paired up and started working on their own creations. They had to combine textures, flavors and ingredients to make their own style of pincho. Each one of the groups presented to the class the reason behind their creation, as well as the meaning and the expected flavor they were creating.

Thank You to the Comillas Academy Staff

Learning an Authentic Comillas Paella Recipe

Yesterday students were treated to an amazing cultural experience as part of culinary week. The Comillas Academy visited a local restaurant and met the owner, Beatriz, who not only fed students with delicious meals, but also taught them how to cook authentic Spanish paella!

Before the students started cooking, Beatriz wanted to make sure they were well nourished for the job to come and treated them to some tasty bocadillos that were devoured in just a few minutes!

Santillana del Mar and Cuevas del Soplao (Caves)

The Comillas Academy recently had the privilege to visit Santillana del Mar-arguably one of the most beautiful small towns (villas) in Spain. This small village just a few miles from Comillas is home to the Altamira Caves, one of the most important cave painting sites in the world. With paintings that are over 15,000 years old, the Altamira Caves are a magical place that made us all appreciate the human species even more. Although we were not allowed to take pictures in the museum, we took a few during our visit to Santillana del Mar.

Comillas Students are an Active Bunch as Well!

I know my last post illustrated just how dedicated Academy students are to their studies, but it is important for us to allow the students to have time to offset their rigorous efforts with some fun activities and exercise!

Estudiando

Although we’ve had a lot of fun lately with cultural excursions in Comillas, the Spanish Academy students remain deeply committed to the Language Pledge®. Here are a few pictures illustrating their dedicated efforts in the classroom.
