Comillas Academy Pays a Visit to “Albergue La Peña”

After watching the movie “The Way” in Spanish, our students learned about the importance of this pilgrimage, the traditions behind the story of James (Santiago), and the different paths people take to get to Santiago de Compostela. Comillas just so happens to be the 15th day on the North Route of El Camino de Santiagoand has a nice but very small shelter.

Who is Cooking up the Spanish Academy’s Tasty Meals?

It’s our pleasure to introduce Juan, the cook at Abbas Hotel. He is a gregarious Cantabrian who has worked at the hotel for a few years now. Aside from being the person responsible for the Comillas Academy’s meals, Juan is also an educator (he has a college degree in education and some teaching experience). When Juan is not cooking up delicious meals for our students, he enjoys playing paddleball.

Here, Juan is with one of our students after an interview that she had to do for one of her projects; Juan was very kind to dedicate time for her to interview him. Provecho!

ELECTION DAY - Who Will Be the next President?

Our students are learning about Spanish politics. Continuing to gain a deeper understanding of Spanish culture and language, our students held elections to vote for their “president” in the morning assembly.

Language Pledge in Beijing

It was a big day for us all in Beijing. After a night’s rest, students were all ready to go for their first day at the MMLA Beijing Academy. They started off with some testing and a taste of classes in the morning. We could tell everyone was having a good time, because we could hear students laughing all the way from our office!

Arrival in Comillas

At exactly 1:25 pm (Spain time!), 48 students, two teachers and the activities coordinator arrived at the ABBA Comillas Hotel. They are pretty tired, but we are checking them in and they will go up to their rooms to shower and rest. They will have lunch after that and then unpack and nap. There is a planned walk around town and then back to the hotel for the welcome meeting and signing of the Language Pledge.

Meanwhile...in Beijing

We know that all of our students are probably packing and preparing for an exciting summer in Beijing, but our staff has already touched down and is working hard to make sure everything is ready for students’ arrival. Our office is getting set up, student materials are being prepared, and RAs have even started making hand made dorm signs for each room.

We are all looking forward to meeting all our students soon!
