Communicating through music and dance!

Our students at the academy are making huge strides communicating using Spanish everywhere and at anytime. But that's not the only way they are getting to know each other.... They are also using music and dance to express themselves here at the academy! Last week, they had a weeklong cultural exploration class, Baile Latino, where they learned Latin dances, such as merengue, bachata, salsa and cumbia. These kids quickly learned how fun it is to dance with a partner and they showcased what they learned on one of the academic assemblies on Thursday evening....

Cultural exploration classes: Beyond language learning

Water Fight to Beat the Heat!

It was 1 p.m. when we finished our scavenger hunt around the school today—which in Granada means it was really, really hot. And what a better solution than an ice cold water fight?

We still don´t know how it happened, but suddenly all our students were grabbing water balloons, filling them up, and running around the patio spraying everybody with water, including us, the RAs. But we didn´t get mad, we got them soaking wet too!

Let's party # 2

As mentoned before, we hosted a party with some teenagers from the city. Here you have more pictures from the event.

A Day in the Life at Green Mountain College!

The first week of full immersion may seem difficult and daunting at first, especially for those just beginning to learn a new language. However, students adapt quickly to the new and challenging environment at the Language Academy.

The Language Pledge® and Classes Start!

Today is the first full day that members of the Academy will be in their target languages, as they have all agreed to The Language Pledge®, which binds them to no longer use English as a form of communication. Most students seem to be both excited and nervous about their journey ahead, as it will be extremely rewarding as well as challenging.

¡Bienvenido!

Greetings from Middlebury Interactive Languages at the Villa de la Montaña Verde!

I am Clara Hoellerbauer, the Spanish Language Director, at the Middlebury Interactive Languages Summer Academy Green Mountain College Site this summer. I am excited to be back for yet another summer, the first of which was in 2010 here at GMC. Since then I have also worked at the Swarthmore site. I was a Spanish teacher for the Spanish Academies and also in my “normal life.”

Monsieur Sainsily: Qui est-il?

“Quality is not an act, it is a habit.”Aristotle

Here at St. Michael’s, this philosophy stands strong. The blending of personalities of teachers from all over the country allows for a committed, intellectual, and captivating staff—all of whom have an unwavering passion for foreign languages and cultures.

Today, the Director of the French Academy—David Sainsily—sat down for an interview, in which he answered questions on his educational and personal background, and, also, on his role outside of the Academy.

Meet the Chinese Language Director: Tong Chen

“If a thing’s worth doing, it is worth doing well.”—Chinese Proverb

Tong Chen, the Director of the Chinese Academy, embodies this philosophy to the fullest extent possible.

Tong Chen was born in Fujian, China, where she spent the entirety of her childhood. Later on, she attended Xiameng University, which is also located in Fujian, China. While there, she studied economics and linguistics, concentrating predominantly in English language and literature studies.
