Welcome to Beijing!

We are happy to announce that all students attending the 2014 MMLA Beijing Academy have arrived safely! Luckily, there were no real flight issues and even traffic from the airport back to campus was on our side - not very common here in Beijing.

Let It Begin: The Language Pledge Ceremony

It has begun: yesterday evening, all our students proudly (and bravely) signed the Language Pledge, stating that they will communicate solely in their target language!

Welcome to Pomona College!

Hello MMLA students and parents!

It’s Almost Showtime!

Greetings from the Academy office staff here at Swarthmore College! All of us here couldn’t be more excited for the beginning of the camp in less than a week and are currently in the midst of making sure everything is prepared for your arrival. We hope you are very excited for an awesome adventure!

Real-life Language Learning at MMLA

Before I went to MMLA, I had only used Mandarin with my tutor during classes. Every once in a while I met a person who spoke Mandarin and had a short conversation with them, but I rarely had the opportunity to use a wide range of vocabulary in real-life settings.

My Decision to Attend the Academy

Why I Chose to Come to the Academy
I first decided to study at the Language Academy because I realized that I had been taking Spanish in school for three years but couldn’t speak it. This frustrated me, as my main motivation behind taking Spanish in the first place was the wealth of practical, real world applications I was told it would offer me, especially in a city like Los Angeles.

The Importance of the Language Pledge

The Language Pledge is the foundation of the Academy experience and what differentiated learning at the Academy from my language learning during the school year.

Attending the Academy was the first time I participated in an immersion environment, and while I was nervous about expressing myself and making friends in a second language, I was also excited to be able to speak Mandarin outside the limits of my classroom.
