It’s Saturday Night, Live!

As dusk fell on the Pomona College campus Saturday evening, Spanish Academy students displayed their various skills at their annual Talent Show! Everything from song and dance routines to stand-up comedy took place. A group of students even did a routine to “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” from Disney’s “Mulan” in Spanish! For the grand finale, a group of students lip-synched to Iggy Azalea’s hit song, “Fancy.” As Saturday evening proved, the Spanish Academy is indeed, “so fancy” and quite talented.

Chinese Academy Students Take a Well Deserved Break

It’s sad to say, but this post will be the last Monday blog from the 2014 MMLA at Swarthmore!

During the past three weeks, Academy students have done an amazing job staying in their target language. Now, it’s time to see how their efforts have paid off. This morning, each student had an oral assessment with their Chinese teachers. It was incredible to see just how much students have improved from their first day at the Language Academy.

Santillana del Mar and Cuevas del Soplao (Caves)

The Comillas Academy recently had the privilege to visit Santillana del Mar-arguably one of the most beautiful small towns (villas) in Spain. This small village just a few miles from Comillas is home to the Altamira Caves, one of the most important cave painting sites in the world. With paintings that are over 15,000 years old, the Altamira Caves are a magical place that made us all appreciate the human species even more. Although we were not allowed to take pictures in the museum, we took a few during our visit to Santillana del Mar.

Recommitment to Language…And Pizza!

Today was a big day for all of the students at the Chinese Academy, as they had to go through some evaluative testing today. To balance the testing, RAs took their students into town for something other than cafeteria food. The most popular dish? It was none other than pizza! At least one person in each group had a slice of pizza in hand. Our living group did the same and afterwards we decided to go watch a Chinese drama called “Meteor Shower” in our assembly room.

Estudiando

Although we’ve had a lot of fun lately with cultural excursions in Comillas, the Spanish Academy students remain deeply committed to the Language Pledge®. Here are a few pictures illustrating their dedicated efforts in the classroom.

Comillas Students are an Active Bunch as Well!

I know my last post illustrated just how dedicated Academy students are to their studies, but it is important for us to allow the students to have time to offset their rigorous efforts with some fun activities and exercise!

World Expo Night!

The ability of people to connect and communicate without relying on the use of words is something that we have all come to better understand through living in language here at the Language Academy. The World Expo is a perfect example of the amazing human capacity for this understanding.

This Week in Arabic Evening Assembly

Every day, evening assembly is a time for students to use their vocabulary and illustrate what they’ve learned in the classroom by presenting it to the entire academy in a creative way. Tonight students presented projects about different foods across the Arab world as well as many different cities, attractions and famous locations. Other students did skits to using the new food vocabulary. Some skits were set in restaurants while others were phone conversations.

A Big Day for the Chinese Academy!

What a day! In the morning, the entire Chinese Academy boarded buses and took off for Chinatown in nearby Philadelphia. First, everyone enjoyed authentic Chinese cuisine at an authentic Szechuan (Sichuan) restaurant, yum! After filling up on all kinds of meats, noodles, tofu, vegetables, and more, we had some time for shopping and exploring in the local stores. Back at campus, everyone was busy enjoying the beautiful weather and preparing for that night’s big event: a Chinese Academy talent show! Some of the many acts included singing, dancing, violin playing, piano playing, and more!
