Recommitment to Language…And Pizza!

Today was a big day for all of the students at the Chinese Academy, as they had to go through some evaluative testing today. To balance the testing, RAs took their students into town for something other than cafeteria food. The most popular dish? It was none other than pizza! At least one person in each group had a slice of pizza in hand. Our living group did the same and afterwards we decided to go watch a Chinese drama called “Meteor Shower” in our assembly room.

Although we’ve had a lot of fun lately with cultural excursions in Comillas, the Spanish Academy students remain deeply committed to the Language Pledge®. Here are a few pictures illustrating their dedicated efforts in the classroom.

Comillas Students are an Active Bunch as Well!

I know my last post illustrated just how dedicated Academy students are to their studies, but it is important for us to allow the students to have time to offset their rigorous efforts with some fun activities and exercise!

World Expo Night!

The ability of people to connect and communicate without relying on the use of words is something that we have all come to better understand through living in language here at the Language Academy. The World Expo is a perfect example of the amazing human capacity for this understanding.

This Week in Arabic Evening Assembly

Every day, evening assembly is a time for students to use their vocabulary and illustrate what they’ve learned in the classroom by presenting it to the entire academy in a creative way. Tonight students presented projects about different foods across the Arab world as well as many different cities, attractions and famous locations. Other students did skits to using the new food vocabulary. Some skits were set in restaurants while others were phone conversations.

A Big Day for the Chinese Academy!

What a day! In the morning, the entire Chinese Academy boarded buses and took off for Chinatown in nearby Philadelphia. First, everyone enjoyed authentic Chinese cuisine at an authentic Szechuan (Sichuan) restaurant, yum! After filling up on all kinds of meats, noodles, tofu, vegetables, and more, we had some time for shopping and exploring in the local stores. Back at campus, everyone was busy enjoying the beautiful weather and preparing for that night’s big event: a Chinese Academy talent show! Some of the many acts included singing, dancing, violin playing, piano playing, and more!

Yet Another Full Day!

Yet another event-filled day has ended here at Pomona College! From classroom to activities time, this day has certainly been packed full of language fun! Chinese Academy students got to hit the sand for a game of “beach” volleyball… all that was missing was the ocean!

Quelle Soirée! (What a Night!)

Tonight all of our hard work and practice leading up to the World Expo paid off. The World Expo is a night for each academy to present artwork, dances, songs, videos and other cultural and academic projects to the faculty and students of the other academies. The assembly room was a lovely sea of blue, red and orange with students from all academies present. At the French academy, we began chanting our specific language cheers, thus inspiring other academies to perform their cheers as well while everyone waited for the World Expo to get underway.

Updated Calling Home Times (a Revision to the Revision)

Hello all,

We noted an error in the revised weekend calling home times published a few days ago on the blog and need to issue a new update.   Chinese and French will actually be calling home this Saturday, July 12 from 4:45pm-5:30pm and Spanish and Arabic will be calling home on Sunday, July 13 from 4:45pm-5:30pm.   These changes are necessary to accommodate the French and Chinese field trips on Sunday and for some logistics relating to student testing.   Our apologies for any confusion.
