French Academy Updates!

We noticed (as have you!) that the French Academy deserved some TLC on our blog. And here it comes in photographic form!

French and Chinese Academies Enjoy Activity Time

Activity time yesterday was a blast for both the French and Chinese Academies! The French Academy took advantage of the shaded quad near Smith Campus Center and played some games on the lawn. Students hung out and competed as the late afternoon sun streamed through the trees, creating a picturesque scene.

The Chinese Academy opted to stay inside. Working on verbal communication, the students laughed and enjoyed the air conditioning.

A Night at the Theatre: French and Spanish Academies

Last night marked the premiere (for one night and one night only) of the Spanish Academy’s play, “Segismundo y Compañia.” A comedic piece revolving around a hat, the play was uproariously funny and enjoyed by all. Afterwards, the students took to the courtyard outside the theatre and were taught how to dance merengueby two of the Spanish teachers under the setting sun. The synchronization of the entire academy at the end of the night was quite impressive, even with such a short lesson.

S’mores Soirée

A Saturday evening falls upon the French Academy, which calls for fun, laughter and s’mores. With a relaxed language pledge instituted for the night, the students enjoyed each other’s company while eating some marshmallows and chocolate and throwing a frisbee around. Though the beginning of the week looms in the distance, the French Academy is refreshed and rejuvenated thanks to the hard work of the French RAs for making this fantastique evening possible.

C’est Le Week-end!

It’s the weekend! For the students at MMLA, that means the schedule is a bit different: no academic classes. This leaves more free time for the Académie de français to bond with their fellow students and their animateurs, or the French RAs.

A Night to Remember - The French Academy Experiences West African Music

Yesterday evening French Academy students got the chance to experience the sounds of West African drums. In addition to learning about the scope of the French-speaking world, students also learned how to break it down, West African style.

World Cup and Dance Routines Make for Fun-Filled Activity Times

An essential part of any day at MMLA is activity time. Breaking away from the structured academic setting of the morning hours, students are able to participate in a variety of activities that they would normally enjoy in their daily lives - all while adhering to the language pledge, of course.

For any soccer fans in the Arabic Academy who worried about missing the action of the Nigeria vs. Argentina World Cup match, all fears were set aside when some of the Arabic RAs set up a screening of the match, along with some accompanying Arabic music in the background.

Language Pledge Ceremony

As I entered the building where the Language Pledge ceremonies were taking place, I could immediately feel the excitement bursting through each room. Before even entering the rooms I could hear the cheering and laugher knocking down the doors. Whether it was the French academy singing traditional songs, the Spanish Academy dancing to different Spanish music, or the Chinese Academy running up and down the aisles throwing high fives, the excitement from each of these academies was uncontainable.
