Fun in the شمس (Sun)

The Arabic Academy enjoyed the California sunshine while playing volleyball and doing yoga with the help of Assistant Language Director Shurouq! It was great to see students teach others how to hit a volleyball (الكرة الطائرة). At the end of the activity time they really got the hang of it!

The quad was a great place for students to enjoy some shade under the tall California trees and have some nice quiet meditation time.

The Art of Language: Arabic Academy’s Studio Day

On Wednesday afternoon, Arabic Academy students allowed their creativity to blossom through avenues of colors and depictions! During cultural activity time, Arabic teacher Majida Hourani’s taught the class how to create and fashion unique pieces of art using themes and symbols from the Middle East. Bright colors exploded on paper as the students worked on their masterpieces.

Beating the Heat: In Language Videos and Pool Time!

It has been hot, hot, hot over the past few days! Thankfully, the Arabic Academy knows how to keep it cool.

Sunday dawned hot and dry. After taking a short trip into town, students started some water balloon wars to cool themselves down. These were as effective as they were fun, and many students ended up soaked!

Arabic Academy’s Weekend Adventures

We’ve finished our first week here at MMLA and it’s been a fun roller coaster of a ride! On Sunday our students were finally able to relax from their packed schedules and take a trip into town.  Arabic Academy students spent their morning roaming The Village and exploring life outside of Pomona’s campus—a  nice change from the usual dorm, to dining hall, to class, to dorm and to dining hall routine. They enjoyed every moment of it and some of them even bought fresh fruit and veggies from the local farmer market vendors in language!

Arabic Academy Students Celebrate Ramadan

This year, Saturday, June 28 marks the beginning of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, and the students of the Arabic Academy celebrated accordingly in language. At sundown, the students and teachers who are observing Ramadan broke their fast with Middle Eastern fare catered by a local restaurant enjoying hummus, shawarma, falafel and pickles.

Arabic Academy Update (Yallah Yallah Arabiya!) (يلا يلا عربية)

The students in the Arabic Academy have been quite busy over the past day!

World Cup and Dance Routines Make for Fun-Filled Activity Times

An essential part of any day at MMLA is activity time. Breaking away from the structured academic setting of the morning hours, students are able to participate in a variety of activities that they would normally enjoy in their daily lives - all while adhering to the language pledge, of course.

For any soccer fans in the Arabic Academy who worried about missing the action of the Nigeria vs. Argentina World Cup match, all fears were set aside when some of the Arabic RAs set up a screening of the match, along with some accompanying Arabic music in the background.
