Latin is the foundation for many modern languages, including English. It was the language of ancient Rome and is spoken today in the Vatican. Many famous poets, philosophers and scholars used Latin as the language of choice to express their ideas. Knowing Latin is helpful for many professions, such as law and medicine, and proves to be beneficial for learning other languages as well.
Middlebury Interactive offers a comprehensive portfolio of Latin courses with both online and brick-and-mortar components. The offerings provide varying levels of immersion methodology to accommodate different world language objectives and learning styles. Courses are designed with the goal of language proficiency and aligned with national standards set by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).
Students learn Latin through ancient, time-honored, classical language approaches that include repetition, parsing, written composition and listening exercises. These techniques, combined with a multimedia approach to learning grammar, syntax and vocabulary, provide students with a strong foundation. Each unit consists of new vocabulary themes and grammar concepts, reading comprehension and writing activities, multimedia culture, history, mythology presentations, and interactive activities and practices that reinforce vocabulary and grammar. There is a strong emphasis on engaging students with authentic classical Latin through ancient passages from prestigious authors such as Virgil, Ovid and Lucretius. The curriculum aligns with the Cambridge School of Latin; therefore, students learn ancient high classical styles of pronunciation and grammar in lieu of generally less sophisticated medieval styles, making it possible for students to comprehend the most Latin from the widest range of time periods.
