Student Interviews...from the French Academy!

From the words of the students, read about how two students view the Academy and the value in learning French!

July 6, 2016

Today, two students from the French Academy shared their thoughts on living immersed in language at the Academy. Read their responses below for a firsthand glimpse into Academy life:

Simone:

What’s your overall view of the Academy, so far?
“So far, I’ve found the Academy to be quite fun. The subjects of our culture classes are interesting and diverse. The work that we put in during our hours in language class is well-balanced by our fun activities and free-time in the evening. I love my 'couloir' (hall) and my RE is a great resource, if i need help.”

What’s your favorite part about the Academy?
“My favorite part of the Academy is probably the evening reunion of my hall (we always play a quick game) or my language classes. I find my teacher, Nico, highly amusing, and I learn a lot of new vocabulary from him.”

What’s the value in learning French?
“Much of the value in learning French lies in the opportunities to experience other cultures that it creates. Last week, I had a culture class that explored the different Francophone countries one can travel to—and that there are 274 million people who speak French in our world. But I think that learning French is also important, because it can act as a bridge language, allowing you to learn the more complex grammatical structures that other languages have. Also, it allows you to learn some of the vocabulary you need to speak other romance languages.”

An Lee:

What’s your overall view of the Academy, so far?
“The Academy has been not what I expected it to be. It’s a great place to learn, but in a different way. There isn’t any homework and traditional learning. Everyone is incredibly open and receptive to learning more French. Through projects that the students are excited to do and club activities that expand our imagination, the Academy has been a wonderful learning experience.”

What’s your favorite part about the Academy?
“My favorite part about the Academy is meeting and making new friends who are also enthusiastic about learning French. Many of the people around me have the same aspirations of becoming a more confident and fluent French speaker.”

What’s the value in learning French?
“The value in learning French is becoming an effective communicator of the world. French opens new opportunities for making connections and exploring. French is spoken on all continents with many Francophone countries.”
