The Pre-Celebration and A Typical Sunday Schedule

Celebrations for the 4th of July Begin in Poultney, Vermont

July 3, 2016

Sundays are for sleeping in and taking advantage of one last day of rest before the busy week begins. And that is exactly what occurred at Green Mountain College this morning. Students and staff alike spent the day enjoying the beautiful weather and catching up with their friends.

Weekends at the Summer Academy are a bit different then weekdays. Students get a break from classes on Saturday and Sunday and are therefore able to relax and participate in some more fun activities and excursions. In general the weekends consist of an increased amount of free time and extra choices for the students to enjoy.

A typical Sunday consists of a continental breakfast from 7:45am to 9am, followed by "Living Group Activities" (i.e. cleaning of rooms and laundry time) until 11:30am. Brunch and some free time occurs from 11:45am to 1pm. During free time students often choose to play pick up games of soccer or volleyball, go to the gym or run around campus, play a card game with some friends or just sit in the sun and chat for a while!

From 1:15pm to 4:14pm Academy specific programs are planned which can vary greatly from assemblies, to guest speakers and performers or interactive events and activities. From 4:30pm to 5:15pm dinner takes place for the Spanish Academy and the Arabic/German Academies eat from 5:15pm to 6pm. Spanish students have calling time after dinner, while the German and Arabic students call before. Calling time is the designated time in which students are able to use their phones to call family members or friends and catch up on social media. During these 45 minutes they are allowed to use English as well in order to communicate with folks back home.

Students have 40 more minutes of free time starting at 6pm and followed by feedback period from 6:45pm to 7:45pm. Constructive feedback is given to students by their teachers. This process actively creates an environment centered around open communication and a community of scholars that take charge of their own growth and learning.

Typically from 8:00pm to 8:30pm a recommitment ceremony is held, in which students recommit to the Language Pledge® and from 8:40pm to 9pm individual Academy assemblies take place. By 9:15pm students are back in their dorms for snack time and hall meetings.

However today was extraordinary since all of the Academy went on an excursion to see the Poultney Fireworks Show in celebration of Independence Day! Students arrived at the site around 6:30pm and played kickball while they waited for the show to begin. The show was quite spectacular and lasted for about an hour. What a great way to end a gorgeous weekend!
