Here's what the Nantes Academy did today:

Today the students started getting used to life at the Blanche de Castille campus with orientation sessions about rules, safety and security, cultural differences, and what a typical day in Nantes will be like. The highlight was a session about what students can expect after they start the Language Pledge, full of activities and discussions aimed at making everyone more comfortable and excited with the challenge that lies ahead! Students learned strategies for what to do when they don’t know a word in French, and practiced circumlocution and approximation by having their friends guess difficult words like “tire,” “cobbler,” and “jelly fish.”

After that, students took a trip to the E. LeClerc mall to take their French out on a test drive. Some students bought souvenirs and pastries while others headed straight for fans to set up in their rooms. While walking around the mall everyone had a chance to discuss cultural differences that they have noticed so far.

Before dinner, the students were able to sign up for their cultural activity class, and could choose between classes about photography, French cinema, and the different regions of France. Each cultural class will take place Monday to Thursday, and students will switch their class every week. Finally, the students got dressed up in preparation for the Language Pledge Ceremony tonight, after which they will only be able to communicate in French!
