Fourth of July Fun at the German Academy!
Location: Saint Michael’s College
What the German Academy did today: The kids are back to their regular schedules of classes and CE’s after an AWESOME Fourth of July! Yesterday, the students practiced their German in the morning before attending a classic American barbecue for lunch! They munched on juicy beef (and veggie!) burgers, grilled chicken, homemade potato salad, and fresh watermelon! To beat the heat in the afternoon, they hit the “pool” (lots of small, blown-up pools of water) at the soccer field and had water balloon fights, volleyball games, and more. After a quick shower and rest period, the students called home to say hi to family and tell them about their week at the academy. Then, post-dinner, we loaded up to go to Essex Junction and watch one INCREDIBLE fireworks show!
The Language Pledge® was lifted for a few hours, giving students the opportunity to communicate with each other across Academies for the first time in over a week. It was fantastic to see the kids make friends, discuss their experiences at the Academy, and reflect on their language learning. They indulged in kettle corn, maple cotton candy, pizza, and other Fourth of July essentials too! The students even had the opportunity to get airbrush tattoos and show them off, with many choosing to rock sparkly American flags or bald eagles. We were happy to see them have so much fun while sharing this special holiday together at MIL!
Tonight, the German Academy will celebrate a mock “Oktoberfest” through a dance and other activities. Tomorrow, they will go on another field trip to Von Trapp Brewery and Bierhall to learn about the history of German beer! No drinking will take place, of course, but the students will have the chance to learn about an integral part of German culture while getting some time off-campus!
