Dances and Dumplings at the Chinese Academy!
Location: Saint Michael’s College
What the Chinese Academy did today: Over the weekend, Chinese students had the opportunity to visit the Burlington Waterfront on a fun-packed field trip! On Saturday, the kids experienced their first dance at MILSA and jammed out to some awesome Chinese beats. Then, on Sunday, they learned how to make authentic dumplings with their teachers and RAs. Yum! This week, the students will return to their usual schedules and rotate through a series of new Cultural Exploration classes. They'll also celebrate The Fourth of July and prepare for Field Day this coming weekend!
In today's classrooms...
Level 1 students practiced their communication skills through the can-do statement of "I can identify and name 5-10 food items I eat." They read menus, described food items, and identified contexts where they would eat certain meals.
In Level 2, students focused on interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational communication. Their can-do statements included "I can read and understand maps from the target culture(s) and my own," as well as "I can give simple directions on how to get from one place to another and what to do at each location." They practiced finding their way around a city using maps, giving and listening to directions in a game of "Hide and Seek," and identifying locations on a digital tour of Burlington.
Level 3 students focused on the same communication skills, but their can-do statement for the day was: "I can understand audio recordings and video about everyday life in the target country/countries." They compared and contrasted city and country life in the US, as well as in other countries.
In Level 4 classes, students honed in on eating habits, customs, and values. Their can-do statement was "I can watch, read, and listen to information about nutritional and health recommendations from public announcements in the target country, and summarize what was stated."
We are so proud of how far they have come and can't wait to see their progress throughout Week 2!
