Can-Dos and Calligraphy for the Arabic Academy

June 26, 2019

Language: Arabic
Location: Saint Michael’s College

What the Arabic Academy did today: Arabic students had their second day of classes today. Over the course of our four weeks at the Academy, our directors and teachers have weekly goals for their students — coined “Can-Do Statements.” Here’s a look at what our Level One, Two, and Three Arabic students are striving for this week:

Level One is working on a “Language Survival Guide.” This includes can-do statements like, “I can copy the letters of the alphabet” and “I can greet friends, say goodbye, express gratitude, and apologize.”

Level Two is working on Introductions and Routines, including: “I can exchange personal information to get to know people around me” and “I can identify and present basic information about routines, interests, pastimes, and household tasks of teenagers in the target country/countries.”

Level Three’s theme is Conversation, Feelings Daily Life and Routines. Their can-do statements include: “I can start, maintain, and end a conversation with my classmates to get to know them” and “I can explain a series of steps needed to complete a task related to my routine.”

Outside of formal lessons, our Arabic students have the opportunity to take Cultural Exploration classes with their teachers. This week, students had a choice between “Survival Arabic” class, fashion class, and chorus. Students also participate in pre-dinner activities with their RAs. Today, students are making “ice cream in a bag,” exploring the outdoors on a nature walk, or learning about photography and fashion.

Tonight, students will participate in a post-dinner Arabic calligraphy workshop. Photos will be posted tomorrow!
