The Arabic Academy took a trip off of Pomona’s grounds to visit the Santa Monica Pier this past week! The students could not withhold their excitement all morning starting from breakfast. After attending classes and eating lunch, students loaded onto the buses and we were on our way. With Peter Pan playing in Arabic, students passed the infamous Hollywood sign and when we finally arrived the smiles on the students’ faces were so BIG! Students splashed in the Pacific Ocean and then walked around the Santa Monica Pier. Some students rode the roller coaster rides in Pacific Park while others cooled off with some ice cream (بوظة). Others enjoyed some Santa Monica grub while visiting the surrounding restaurants and shopping centers. The Santa Monica ocean breeze was very cool and relaxing, and had us all wondering if this really was paradise.
However, our trip did not end with just visiting the water! Students then went to visit the Kind Fahad Mosque where students got to see the beautiful Arab architecture and carefully designed mosaics. The intricate tiles were captivating, and students asked a lot of questions to professors and learn about Islam. The visit to the mosque also welcomed us with افطار (breaking of the fast of Ramadan). We have learned that students never say no to food. :) When we returned to campus, students went straight to bed as it was a successful, fun and informative field trip!
